Mission
"To serve as the vehicle to express the collective views of the membership and to speak for the meat packing/processing industry in Canada and to contribute to the competitiveness of the industry domestically and internationally."AIMS
- Represent the Canadian meat packing/processing industry and be responsive to membership needs.
- Provide a forum for Council members to discuss and consider matters of mutual interest and industry import, serve as a vehicle for expressing collective views of the membership and act as a spokesman for the industry.
- Foster high standards of industry integrity and a wide range of wholesome, nutritional meat products.
- Strive for a free and expanding market environment with appropriate economic returns.
- Develop and maintain effective communications with various levels of government, and all elements of food production, processing, distribution and marketing, with consumer organizations, the research and academic community and the news media with respect to all matters that impact on the meat processing industry in Canada.
- Enhance the competitive capability of the Canadian industry.
CMC Structure
The Canadian Meat Council is governed by:
- a 22-member Board of Directors elected from the federally inspected meat packer/processing members. One of the Directors represents the associate members of Council.
- a 7-member Executive Committee elected from, and by, the Directors.
Council activities focus on federal government issues and liaison with other national associations representing groups such as livestock producers, meat retailers, consumers, exporters and traders.
Members participate in one or more of the Board-mandated Committees that represent the basic interests of the membership:
- Beef, Veal and Lamb
- Pork
- Technical/Processed Meats/Environment
- Foodservice
- Associate Members (Special Events)
- Annual Conference
Administrative committees handle details of audit, nominations, Bylaws and compensation. In addition, Ad Hoc Committees, Advisory Groups and Task Forces are established, as necessary, to handle special issues.
Communication
The Council regularly publishes a Members Bulletin. Special reports are also prepared to highlight accomplishments of the organization and to provide an overall profile of the industry and its importance to the Canadian economy.
CMC supports Meat Probe, Canada's red meat nutrition newsletter, in co-operation with the Beef Information Centre and the Canadian Pork Council.
The Council regularly prepares Briefs and Position Papers on matters of specific interest.
The Council library provides economic, technical, nutritional and statistical information on the industry.
