Making Superior Pigs - For Better Pork

One of the key reasons why our breeding stock and our pork has been so well received worldwide is the cooperative and collaborative efforts fostered among those involved in our industry.

A CANADA IMPROVED PIG ready for domestic use by the commercial industry and for exporting to many countries around the world, is the result of many service agencies, associations, governments, universities and colleges applying leading edge technology and programs to great-grandparent and grandparent stock owned by the swine breeders.

Genetic Evaluations:

The data of all pigs under the Canadian Swine Improvement Program is evaluated nationally by the Canadian Centre for Swine Improvement Inc. (CCSI) under the direction of Mr. Brian Sullivan.

CCSI is an organization created by the swine industry to provide leadership and expertise for the genetic improvement of swine in Canada. CCSI computes Canadian genetic evaluations, maintains the national performance database, develops national standards for swine recording and coordinates research and development activities in cooperation with its national and provincial partners. CCSI can offer a broad range of products and services to Canadian breeders, exporters or international clients, including: expertise in the design of selection, genetic evaluation and performance recording programs; services for data processing and communications and for research and data analysis; genetic improvement software for individual herds or for national needs. They are located at:

DNA Testing Services:

The DNA technology for testing for the halothene gene (PSS) which was founded by Dr. David MacFarlane of the University of Toronto and Dr. Peter O'Brien formerly of the University of Guelph, is owned by Innovations Foundation. The Canadian Pork Council applied financial resources and expertise to negotiate the terms of licensing to the swine industry.

Licenses were granted to:

Le Centre de dèveloppement du porc du Quèbec inc., for the province of Quèbec, and Ontario Swine Improvement Inc. for all the other provinces.

Breeders submit samples to laboratories with a working relationship with one of the above regional centres. While results of these tests are confidential, the information is put on registration pedigrees at the request of the breeders.

Please check the publications section as yearly summaries of PSS
testing can be found in the annual Who's Who.

Registry Services:

As noted elsewhere on this website, Canadian Livestock Records Corporation maintains the Herd Registry on behalf of CSBA.

Marketing and Promotion:

Canadian Swine Exporters Association is a partner with CSBA in the promotion and marketing of the breeders' swine genetics. Together these two associations present a swine industry strategy to a Federal Government steering committee, comprised of members from International Programs and Market and Industry Services branches of Agriculture & Agri- Food Canada, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. Through programs under the auspices of these departments, assistance may be available for projects with international implication.

The Canadian Swine Expertise Directory was published in 1996 by Canadian Swine Exporters Association. Copies may be obtained by contacting:
