The National Swine Registry

CSBA represents and maintains the registry for all the pure breeds of swine across Canada. An amalgamation of several breed associations occurred in 1991 resulting in one group representing all breeds. Prior to this event, the CSBA has a long history, representing some of the breeds of swine in Canada since its inception in 1889.

Our association utilizes the services of the Canadian Livestock Records Corporation (CLRC) in Ottawa, Ontario to issue the certificates of registration and maintain the herd book data. The CLRC is a neutral third party organization which maintains the herd books for approximately 50 breed associations representing several species. This organization is also incorporated under the Animal Pedigree Act.

The Canadian swine registry has two sectors. First, the regular herd book is closed, meaning that only purebreds of each breed are registered in the section for that particular breed. Second, an alternate herd book has been established for nonpurebred animals, allowing for the registration of grade animals with their percentage of purity recorded on the pedigree. Animals registered in this division of the herd book are not eligible for the purebred sections, however at 15/16 purity, are evaluated with purebred animals.
